It was a typical day at work for Terrain Wright in January 2023 when he first laid eyes on his female colleague heading back to her department. Struck by her beauty, he learnt that her name, Angelique Barrett, was befitting of her halo aura. Despite the unrequited love, Terrain remained devoted to having Angelique ‘Wright’ by his side. His dedication paid off, and that fateful office encounter blossomed into the nuptial flower of a royal ever after nearly two years later.

While their love story may inspire hopeful romantics, their union was far from a fairy tale at first. “We met at my previous job through a mutual colleague. His catch line was to ask me for some of my food, and I found him very annoying whenever he would approach me. I also saw him as a nerd,” she told Island Wedding.

So, what exactly inspired this change of heart? For Terrain, it was facing the reality that she was just not that into him, and acting accordingly.

Noticing this shift, she reached out to him, and while he was unsure if this was an attempt to regain his attention, he took a chance anyway and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. “Her actions proved that she was genuinely concerned and was making a deliberate effort to get to know me.”

Unbeknownst to him, however, Terrain had actually caught her attention prior to that with an exchange by the printer, and it was there that Angelique began to take a second look. “I called her by her first name for the first time as we stood by the printer, and she asked, ‘How did you know my name?’ I started getting to know more than just that since that day,” he added.

The two even have different perspectives on their first date. Terrain remembered attending a Chris Brown concert that summer. Although her little sister joined them, they still had a wonderful time enjoying each other’s company. For Angelique, however, sparks truly flew during a joint birthday celebration for him and her best friend that September.

By October, the two decided to take a leap of faith together. “Initially, we were all about exploring each other’s chapters to see where it takes us. If it wasn’t to our liking, we would simply place it back on the bookshelf. But we decided that we wanted to continue to indulge in reading more of the chapters from our love book,” Angelique said.

Impressed by how God-fearing, humble, intelligent and upstanding Terrain is, he continues to exceed her expectations.

“Terrain has helped me find my way back to Christ. I was a Christian at the time but was still engaging in worldly things, as there was an extreme struggle. I believe God used this lovely young man to demonstrate His love by accepting me with all my flaws and broken pieces and helping mend them together beautifully. I had struggled to own my truth and accept my past for what it was, and he helped with my healing process.”

She continued, “I believe God used him as a vessel to uproot every hurt I had been holding on to for my freedom. He has poured into me tremendously, reminding me of who I am. He constantly affirms me during the times [when] I needed it the most. He’s also an effective communicator, one who listens, analyses the situation from diverse views, and then gives positive and constructive feedback.”

When he started asking technical questions, Angelique turned to God and, in her heart, knew that He wanted her to be transparent with the man He was about to unite her with. She also realised that Terrain was the one, as she had dreamt about him proposing as early as December 2023.

As his source of wise counsel, Angelique’s loving and caring spirit keeps Terrain in a euphoric state of enchantment. Shy by nature, her creativity and godliness is nothing short of inspiring. “She has acted as a mirror that allows me to look at my flaws. But she also helps me find solutions to correct them. When it comes to encouraging me and supporting my ambitions, she does not fall short. Her most important contribution has been made to my spiritual growth. She is an amazing accountability partner, and I find immense joy in learning more about Christ with her. She provides a safe space to be open and candid. She tries to understand and accept my perspective, and she shares the same values as me, especially when it comes to communication. She is ready and willing to engage in activities that I suggest and always offer words of affirmation. She is very willing to put in the effort and take accountability,” he said.

After seven months of courting, Angelique’s dreams came true when Terrain asked her to be his wife. Setting the stage with a WhatsApp group called ‘You guys know why you are here’, he set the proposal plans in motion. Knowing she loves Chinese food, he secretly coordinated with her friends to invite her and her family to dinner at her favourite spot, China Express at Marketplace in Kingston, ensuring she wouldn’t suspect a thing.

Buying a fresh bouquet of red and pink roses for the occasion, and with pictures showcasing their love, he wore a blazer in her favourite colour, purple. While dining, she saw other loved ones walking in and received the best surprise when the last guest arrived. “I came in last and went down on my knees. I had on a T-shirt with “Will you marry me?” printed on it underneath my blazer, so when I opened it, she saw what was written, with two boxes for the options ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ and a line for my signature at the end.”

Angelique, who found this so unique in delivery, started crying before he got on one knee and opened the purple ring box, “I was overjoyed. It was just beautiful. And of course, I ticked the ‘Yes’ box.”

From the theme to the decor, Angelique planned her nuptials, with the assistance of close family members and friends.

On November 9, Terrain and Angelique became Mr and Mrs Wright at a beautiful wedding ceremony at Christar Villas Hotel in Kingston. Choosing a royal and fairy-tale theme, the couple was most pleased that their union was ordained by God.

Tying the knot with his God-sent partner was all that the groom could ever hope for. “The best moment for me was seeing her walk down the aisle looking angelic. It was at that moment that I knew it wasn’t a dream, and that my life was going to change forever.”

For the bride, the wedding was everything she wanted and more. “If I had to choose the best moment, it would be exchanging vows. We did both traditional and customised vows; and I couldn’t wait to read mine and see his reaction, because I love writing poems and had never written one for him. So that was the perfect moment to express my feelings wholeheartedly, using my poetic talent. I was also excited to hear his vows, which had a touch of Shakespearean elegance,” Mrs Barrett-Wright shared.

The newly-weds shared their first dance as husband and wife to Michael Jackson’s The Lady in My Life. Admitting that this moment was more comical than romantic, the two shared that despite rehearsals, Angelique forgot the moves at the last minute. For her, however, it didn’t matter. She was the happiest bride alive.
