Impressive TG blank Molynes 2-0
Tivoli Gardens started the second round of the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) in impressive fashion after a comfortable 2-0 win over Molynes United at the Stadium East field yesterday.
Goals from Barrington Pryce (12) and Horatio Morgan (25th) saw the west Kingston-based club to only their fourth win of the season.
They also climbed one place to seventh in the table on 16 points, but coach Jerome Waite says they could have been more clinical with their chances.
“We all watched the game, and it should have been more (goals). But it always comes down to decision-making from these youngsters.” he said.
Nevertheless, he was also happy to keep Molynes off the scoresheet and praised his defenders for the commitment on the day.
“My team did very well because the player that was named the man-of-the-match (Denville Watson) blocked three balls on target, and Pryce also blocked two. So it was a game that could have gone either way, but we did well, as one of the objectives was not to concede,” he commented.
Molynes started the brighter of the teams and had good chances through Mickel Graham, whose shot was parried wide by goalkeeper Darren Donaie and Rashawn Livingston, whose effort was cleared off the line.
However, Molynes were caught napping on a set piece and Nichalia Fuller lifted the ball into the area for Pryce to steer a header into the far post.
Fuller remained the catalyst for most good things Tivoli did as he created good chances for Watson, from a corner, Anthony Nelson and Horatio Morgan, who hit the post.
Morgan would make it 2-0 when he turned home Nelson’s low cross from 12 yards.
Molynes had a great chance towards the end of the half, but Watson blocked Jason Wright from five yards away.
Tivoli continued where they left off in the second half, and only a last-ditch tackle denied Morgan after excellent play by Fuller.
Fuller then had his opportunity to make it three in the 57th minute, but his effort was not strong enough to get past Donaie in goal.
Molynes’ best chance to get a goal fell to Wright after a neat build-up, but Pryce diverted his attempt wide of the mark.
Shevon Miller also had a good chance for Molynes in the 73rd minute but scuffed his effort from six yards. Wright then had his effort blocked by Pryce three yards out on the follow-up.
Fuller had two more clear chances to put the game to bed late on when he went through on goal but was indecisive on both occasions.
Tivoli then bossed possession late in the game to earn a deserved victory.
“We were really awful in how we defended in the first half,” said Molynes coach Jermaine Thomas. “We controlled the first part of the game, and I thought we conceded against the runner of play and then we created some good ones but never took them.”
The defeat left Molynes at the foot of the 14-team table on 10 points. Mount Pleasant remain on top of the league with 31 points after a 1-0 win over Portmore. Arnett Gardens are second with 30 after they clipped Dunbeholden 1-0.
