Martin Henry's insightful article

The Editor, Sir:

I must congratulate Martin Henry on the insight he delivered in his article, 'The Cheap Politics of Poverty', published on Sunday, January 10. The piece was brilliantly written. He deserves tremendous commendation, as I have seen few columnists come close to the reality of this article. The breadth and depth of the column's content is a true revelation of the dire problems with Jamaica, which are plain but most of us fail to see.

Other similarly brilliantly written pieces have been published in recent times. Peter Espeut's 'Destined for Greatness', on Friday, August 28, 2009; and just over 10 years ago, Morris Cargill's 'Poverty and God's will', on November 4, 1999 (Webpage: www.jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/19991104/cleisure/c4.html) was a classic!

Still relevant

I highly recommend to Garfield Grandison and his editorial team, that Mr Cargill's article be reprinted (unedited). It highlighted the economic woes Jamaica faced at that time. But when one reads the article, one gets the feeling as if Cargill wrote it last week. Those economic issues he wrote about are exact to those facing the nation right now. It is still relevant today and probably will still be relevant 10 years from now. After reading it, I am sure many Jamaicans will come to understand that economically, as a nation, we are literally back at square one, or, rather, we never left it!

I am, etc.,
