CMI trains regional shipping-industry partners
The Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI), in its most recent overseas training initiative, provided 19 stevedores from the Barbados Port Inc (BPI) and the Shipping Association of Barbados (SAB) with 'Stevedoring Operations Level III' and 'Essentials of Occupational Safety & Health Standards for Maritime Port Operations Level I' qualifications. The training provided the participants with critical certification as supervisors within the shipping industry.
The endeavour was fully supported by the Barbados Workers' Union (BWU), and was jointly funded by BPI and the SAB.
In a ceremony held in March to acknowledge the outstanding achievement of the graduates, David Jean-Marie, BPI's chief executive officer, commended the graduates on their achievement. "The BPI believes that the strength of our business lies within our human resources. We have a strong commitment to the continuous professional and personal development of our staff, and we are extremely pleased to work with the SAB, CMI and the BWU on this initiative," Jean-Marie said.
In his address to the group, Osric Forrest, director, School of Advanced Skills, CMI, emphasised the important role that professional training and development plays in the workplace and praised the efforts of the BPI and the SAB in making the training available in Barbados. Forrest referred to the graduates as pioneers and urged them to recognise that their actions moving forward will impact the productivity of the Barbados economy.
