The founder and editor in chief of Guyana’s Stabroek newspaper David de Caires has died.

He was 70 years old.

The newspaper said De Caires died in Barbados on Saturday, after travelling there two weeks ago for medical assessment subsequent to suffering a heart attack in August.

De Caires and his wife, Doreen, established the newspaper in 1986, a time when there was no press freedom in Guyana.

The press was subject to heavy censorship and influence under the administration of then president Forbes Burnham.

De Caires, a former lawyer, helped engineer change by allowing criticism of government to be published in Stabroek.

Over the years, the independent newspaper has also clashed with government officials, wary of or riled by criticism.

As recently as 2006, government agencies and ministries withdrew advertising to Stabroek, after President Bharrat Jagdeo blasted the newspaper for denouncing his administration during the election campaign.
