Chambers rescues Reno with late goal
WESTERN BUREAU:
Reno FC averted a fourth straight loss when midfielder Afiba Chambers scored in the 90th minute to earn them a 2-2 draw with Harbour View FC in the Red Stripe Premier League yesterday at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in Santa Cruz.
Chambers' third goal of the season came at a most appropriate time, as it gave them a hard-earned point to stem their free fall and ease concerns about their form before the Christmas break.
Codean Smikle has been having a breakout season in midfield for Reno, and he obliged
in style when his 12th-minute goal stunned the Harbour View delegation.
The goal lifted Reno's spirits after their recent struggles and, perhaps, should have increased their lead were it not for some important interceptions from the Harbour View defenders.
They held the lead until an unfortunate own goal gave Harbour View the equaliser at the 37th minute, with the teams unable to break the deadlock entering the half-time break.
The second half was as lively as the first, with Harbour View in particular seeking the go-ahead goal.
Harbour View defender Christopher Harvey then fired into the Reno goal in the 77th minute.
It seemed then that Reno were destined for yet another tough loss, until Chambers popped up to beat the Harbour View keeper for a share of the points.
Harbour View moved to 23 points for third place, while Reno remain just above the relegation places on 15 points, with only Barbican, Humble Lion and Boys' Town below them.
