JPS to begin prepaid service on April 8

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says it will begin offering pre-paid service on April 8.
The JPS says the Pay-As-You-Go service is open to persons who live in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine.
According to Ruthlyn Johnson, the Corporate Communication Officer at the JPS, the service will be made available to 2,000 customers.
She says customers on the pre-paid service will not have to worry about reconnection fees or making a deposit and they will be able to track their energy usage.

Johnson says the JPS carried out a successful pilot of the pre-paid service in Portmore, St. Catherine.
According to her, 10 of the 13 participants in the pilot have remained on the service.
She also says the participants reported average savings of 35 percent.
In the meantime, the JPS Corporate Communication Officer says measures will be put in place to prevent meter tempering and electricity theft.
