Winning start for Jamaica

Lady Jamrockerz's Cari-bbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) title defence is up and running in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), with a resounding win over Barbados on Monday, which leaves national coach Timothy Eatman confident his charges will reign supreme again.

In preliminary round action, the black green and gold outfit outscored Barbados 75-57, with Jennifer George hitting a game-high 24 points.

"I really think we have a good team that will get better," Eatman told The Gleaner yesterday.

"We want to win gold. One pass at a time, one shot a time," the veteran United States college basketball coach stressed.

"There is not one day off that we will have here, so we have to be able to play more than just five, six people," he continued. "The starting group played well enough to jump out to a big lead, but substitutes struggled."

Eatman added his team has depth and quality to go all the way, while lauding "Jamaicans waving the flag and supporting".

Jamaica played Game Two against Guyana last night, with their third match against BVI tonight at 9 p.m.

"I think it (her performance) was alright, always room for improvement, it's my first game and I think we will improve as a team and get better," George said.

"I missed four shots, so I will see how I can get better and help my team and my country," George added of her performance.
