Wray & Nephew Award for 'Shrimpy'

Local boxing legend Richard 'Shrimpy' Clarke will be handed the Spirit of Jamaica Award for Boxing by Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum today. The award will be presented by the title sponsors of the Wray & Nephew 'Contender' boxing series just prior to the first semi-final match tonight at the Chinese Benevolent Association, in which Devon 'Concrete' Moncriffe and Kemahl Russell will face off.

Clarke, who is the head coach at Stanley Couch Gym in downtown Kingston, has for decades committed his life to the sport of boxing in Jamaica. He has won numerous championships during his career and was the head trainer for the 2012 Wray & Nephew Contender, Donovan 'Police' Campbell and mentored four of the last five winners of the series.

Today, Clarke is being recognised for his achievements and his commitment to the sport and its development over the years.

The 52-year-old said he feels great to know that the sponsors of the event have selected him for this special award.

"Sometimes we work hard and do our best and not look for a reward in return. I wasn't looking for an award from my commitment to the sport, moreso from Wray & Nephew. As head coach for the gym, I made sure to commit myself to the preparation of my boxers for their matches, but I am happy to know that I was thought of and selected for this award. As a matter of fact, I am overwhelmed," Clarke said.

Clarke said he has been involved in boxing since he was very young, living along Studley Park Road in Kingston and having to travel to a gym located near Heroes Circle.

"From I was a youth, I was fascinated with the sport, and I got involved in boxing by going to the gym, watching others until I, too, started training."

Clarke won 27 of 33 fights as a professional boxer and was awarded the Order

of Distinction two years ago by the Government of Jamaica for his contribution to the sport.
