Savanna-la-Mar General Hospital offering limited services after overnight incident, two shot
There is now limited service at the Savanna-la-Mar General Hospital in Westmoreland.
The Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA) says this is as a result of simmering tensions arising from an incident last night in which two persons were shot.
The WRHA reports that an ambulance, which was not in service, was set on fire by angry protesters who also barred fire fighters from putting out the blaze.
Chairman of the WRHA Calvin Brown says staff at the hospital continues to be adversely affected by the unrest, which has spilled over onto the hospital’s compound.
As a result, Brown says only limited services are currently available in the Accident and Emergency Department.
He says this will continue until the WRHA is satisfied that the situation in the town has been brought under control and it is safe for health workers to resume normal duties.
