'Hurry Up' gospel singer Sister Scully is dead

Gospel singer, Sister Scully best known for the very popular Southern gospel cover 'Hurry Up' has died.

The singer who has other songs such as No Other Blood, He Rolled The Sea Away and Hard Road To Travel died suddenly at her home in Spanish Town, St Catherine, last night.

Sister Scully whose real name was Audrey Scully Hall was 57 years old.

According to best friend and fellow gospel singer, Joan Flemmings, Scully's husband found her unresponsive in their bedroom around 7 p.m.

"When Chris (her husband) called me and gave me the news I couldn't’t help myself I just started crying," said Flemmings.

Sister Scully and Joan Flemmings have been inseparable on the gospel circuit.

"She is my best friend. She is like one of the mothers of gospel music. She started out over 30 years ago when we were not singing for anything and enjoying it, flag down taxi go to the show and still a mash it up," said Flemmings of her friend.

Sister Scully who is one of the pioneers of traditional gospel music in Jamaica has been dubbed a powerhouse by those who have seen her in action.

Her strong powerful voice has been able to move patrons as she performs.

"Since last night I have been trying to sleep and can’t. I don’t know how I am going to manage," said Flemmings.

"When we travel together we don’t bother with separate rooms, we share the same room. Even when they (promoter) give her own room she takes her stuff and come to my room. No matter how I run her she just say ‘move over’ and make herself comfortable. We always check up on each other," said Flemmings.

Since news of her death broke, there has been an outpouring of condolences on Facebook from fans and gospel artistes such as Jodian Pantry, Jabez and concert promoters.
