The Russian embassy rolled out the red carpet to celebrate the federation's National Day and to welcome diplomats, government officials and other well-wishers to their day of unity and peace, last Thursday evening at the Venetian, Terra Nova All-Suite Hotel.

As specially invited guests made their way into the luxurious ballroom, they were greeted by the man of the hour, newly appointed Russian Ambassador to Jamaica Vladimir Vinokurov, along with head of the embassy's consular section, Audrey Dryakin.

Guests mingled over glasses of wine and champagne before Vinokurov took to the stage to officially welcome his guests. In his short remarks, he noted that Jamaica was a special to Russia. He also spoke on his appreciation for Jamaica's outstanding culture and the beautiful mountains and beaches.

LONG-STANDING PARTNERS

In her address, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith noted that Russia is one of Jamaica's long-standing partners and that Jamaica looks forward to having greater interaction with the federation.

"This relationship is mutually beneficial, and the Russian scholarships serve Jamaicans very well. I want to publicly express our appreciation for making these scholarships possible." She continued, "There is evidence for potential growth with Russia, and Jamaica values the relationship."

With a toast to both countries signalling the close of the formalities, guests made their way to the food stations, while indulging in their choice of cocktails and sweet treats.
