Jamaica, South Africa final at World University Netball Champs

Jamaica's netballers continued their impressive display at the World University Championships in Florida yesterday, stopping Australia 45-38 in semi-final action to advance to today's final at the St Thomas University campus in Miami Gardens.

The unbeaten Jamaican girls will face South Africa, who defeated Uganda 52-42 in the other semi-final. Match time is 2 p.m. (Ja time).

Head coach of Jamaica team, Annette Daley told The Sunday Gleaner that yesterday's semi-final was challenging.

"The girls worked really hard, except for the final few minutes, where they made a lot of errors," Daley said.

Took control

In yesterday's semi-final, Jamaica, led by the experienced Khadijah Williams at goal attack and goal shooter Shanice Beckford, took control early and raced to a big 18-7 lead after the first quarter and 29-17 at half-time.

Australia lifted their game after the break and outscored the Jamaicans, 12-6, to reduce the deficit. Despite their best efforts in the final stanza, the Australians could not maintain their third-quarter momentum.

Beckford who dominated inside the circle, had 40 goals from 50 attempts, with Williams scoring five from nine.

South Africa, who lost by four goals in the final to England four years ago, are also unbeaten in the competition.
