If last year is anything to go by, thousands of runners, walkers and wheelchair participants are expected to converge at the University of the West Indies for the fifth staging of the CB Group-UWI 5K on Sunday, November 13, starting at 7 a.m. sharp.

The event, which was established to support the University of the West Indies Scholarship Fund to assist students with their tertiary education has again received the commitment from the CB Group as the title sponsor. Also on board are corporate sponsors National Baking Company, Scotiabank, Port Authority, Proven Investments, Mayberry Investments, Rainforest Seafood, the European Union, Island Grill, Sun Bloc, Power 106, The Pegasus hotel, Dunlop Corbin, and Running Events.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

According to Pro Vice-Chancellor Archibald McDonald, principal, UWI Mona Campus, the annual event is a part of the university's continued commitment to its social responsibility as the leading tertiary institution in the areas of education and sports. He is also optimistic that this year's event will exceed the ambitious $20 million target.

A special feature of the annual event is an award which is presented to a Jamaican who has given outstanding and dedicated service to sports. This year, the award will be presented to International Netball Association president Molly Rhone.

McDonald has praised Rhone for her work in netball.

"The University is proud to honour Molly Rhone for her tremendous contribution to netball. She is a national treasure," McDonald said.

The annual fundraiser, which is again under the professional direction of Alfred 'Frano' Francis of Running Events Jamaica, last year attracted more than 4,000 participants and raised $10.5 million.

Participants who wish to study the route ahead of time may visit the website at www.uwi5k.com.jm. Entry fee is $1,000 and registration is now open at www.runningevents.jc.com or at the UWI sports department.
