Police seize eight guns and several rounds of ammunition in 24 hrs
The police are reporting that they seized eight firearms, including one Intratec sub-machine gun, across the island over a 24-hour period ending yesterday morning.
Four persons were arrested in connection with the seizures, while two men who reportedly fired at the police were shot.
In one of the incidents, Major Basil Jarrett, civil military cooperation and media affairs officer for the Jamaica Defence Force, yesterday reported that during a joint police-military operation, a cordon and search was established in the vicinity of the York Park Fire Station.
During the operation, a man was spotted in front of a shop adjacent to the fire station.
He was approached and searched by the police and a Springfield XD9 Subcompact 9mm Pistol with one magazine and 15 live rounds was found on his person.
The man and the weapon and ammunition were then taken to the Central Police Station for sorting and processing.
Since the start of this year, the police have seized more than 400 illegal firearms and almost 7,500 rounds of ammunition.
