SAJ staff celebrates Marcus Garvey School graduates
Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) staff members joined teachers, parents, and well-wishers to celebrate the 25 young graduates of the Marcus Garvey School in Greenwich Farm, Kingston, at their ceremony, held at the Holy Name of Jesus Church on July 4, 2017.
The graduates had earned their place at top-performing primary schools across Kingston, St Andrew, and St Catherine by successfully completing their studies at the early childhood level.
The students were rewarded with graduation gifts of backpacks filled with school supplies, courtesy of the Marcus Garvey Staff Committee of the SAJ. The committee raised funds for the graduation gifts at a recent fundraiser, which was supported by many member companies across the shipping industry as well as by SAJ staff.
The school is sponsored by the SAJ, which provides support for school infrastructure and activities. In addition to this, the staff supports a feeding programme for the students through voluntary monthly contributions.
The Marcus Garvey School is recognised by the Ministry of Education as the top early childhood institution in its zone. The outgoing chairman of the school, Father Rohan Tulloch, described the relationship between the school and the Shipping Association during the graduation ceremony. He said, "The contribution of the SAJ has allowed us to offer top-quality education to the citizens of Greenwich Farm. Without the SAJ, this product just would not be possible."
