$30,000 to obtain a divorce ... Justice Ministry to hand over more fake separation files to police

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says the Ministry is to hand over three more cases of fake divorces to the police fraud squad which is probing a corruption scandal at the divorce unit at the Supreme Court.

Chuck told our news centre that four cases were submitted to the fraud squad in June.

According to him, more persons who say they were provided with fake divorce papers by the unit are to come forward.

He claims that persons have admitted that they paid $30,000 to obtain a divorce.

Chuck says he has documents to show that divorces were signed by fictitious judges as well as recent divorce applications submitted by a deceased attorney.

Chuck disclosed the information today at a meeting with disgruntled workers in the divorce unit who staged a sit-in this morning to register their objection to claims of corruption in the office.

They have also demanded an apology.

However, the justice minister says he will not apologise and insists that the divorce unit must be cleaned up.

Chuck says his comments were not intended for the hardworking and honest workers in the unit but those who are involved or facilitate corrupt activities.

Noting that delays created an opportunity for persons to corrupt the system, the Justice Minister says he’s working with the Chief Justice to address the issue.
