Police Commissioner George Quallo has signalled that he will demit office next week, law-enforcement officials have revealed.

The officials told The Gleaner late yesterday that next Thursday would be Quallo's final day as the nation's police chief.

His decision to walk comes less than a year after he took over leadership of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

It is also the fourth leadership change for the JCF in eight years.

In 2010, Owen Ellington was appointed to replace Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin before suddenly opting for early retirement in 2014.

Ellington's successor, Dr Carl Williams, also opted for early retirement and was replaced by Quallo in April last year.

As one of his final official acts, Quallo is today scheduled to tour sections of St James, where a state of public emergency is in place, with Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Deputy Commission of Police Clifford Blake is tipped to act as commissioner until a replacement is named.
