'I knew he would go down' - Yeyo secures 21 seconds TKO win over Canadian

There was excitement galore at the Chinese Benevolent Association auditorium on Wednesday night, as Jamaica's Nico Yeyo scored a shocking 21 second technical knockout victory over his Canadian opponent Mayron Zeferino, in the second week of the Wray and Nephew Contender competition.

Zeferino, with a 5-0 record, and who had high hopes of not only winning the fight but the competition, believed that he could have continued, and his corner, though stating that they respected the decision of the referee, were emphatic that "he stopped it too quickly."

Yeyo,who is a mercurial fighter, had one of his best nights. He is known to be either very aggressive or extremely cautious, and as fans wondered, which Yeyo they would see on Wednesday night, he unveiled his tactics quickly. As the bell to start the fight sounded, he rushed across the ring, engaged his opponent and started throwing "punches in bunches" from all angles. Some landed and some missed, but a solid right hook to the head, caught Zeferino flush, and he fell on to the ropes.

It was obvious that Zeferino was hurt, as referee Peter Richards picked up the count from the timekeeper. He stumbled across the ring and was on wobbly legs when the referee took a good look at him, and decided to call a halt to the proceedings.

The Canadian looked bemused, and was given a seat in his corner, as ringside doctor Andre McDonald rushed in to check him out.

He recovered quickly and was very subdued as he pondered how quickly it had all ended. On the other side of the ring, an excited Yeyo, who had struggled the day before to make the 147 pounds weight limit, said that his plan was to attack very early and catch his man by surprise.

"The plan worked. I wanted to go after him quickly and land some hard punches. When that right hand caught him, I knew that he was going to go down. It landed just right. I agree that the fight should have been stopped."
