Barrett talks up Cornwall threat
Warren Barrett, assistant coach of Cornwall College (CC), said his boys showed character on Saturday in ending Garvey Maceo's perfect run in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup in their come from behind 3-2 quarterfinal win at the STETHS Sports Complex.
Ronaldo Wright gave Garvey Maceo the lead in the eighth minute, but not for long, as Solano Birch equalised two minutes later. Just before halftime, Tyrique Henry gave Garvey Maceo the lead once more.
Shavon McDonald found the equaliser once more for CC in the 53rd minute. Matthew Thorpe found the winner in the third minute of stoppage time to ensure CC get maximum points and edge closer to the semi-finals.
"Their stats spoke for itself. I got a rundown on them this morning on how disciplined they play defensively, and we saw that as well. Kudos to our boys. We are the first team to score three on Garvey Maceo ,and it was only fitting of the performance we had today," said Barrett.
"The boys showed character we come from a goal down each time and at the end of the day we came out victorious," he added.
Merron Gordon, coach of Garvey Maceo, said that he expects the 2018 daCosta Cup winner to come from their quarter-finals group. While admitting that this now shows CC can go all the way, Barrett believes that the winner will come down to the team that executes on the day and takes its chances.
"Well yes, we are also unbeaten ourselves, so now we are in the window as well. I guess teams that probably would have underestimated us coming in with nine victories out of 10 in the first round. Now everyone will be looking at Cornwall seriously, that yes we will be a threat," said Barrett.
"It's highly complimentary of coach Gordon to think that the winner will come from this group. As coaches, all we can do is prepare the boys to go out and play 90 minutes plus, each day. It's hard to say we are the favourites with all the teams in the competition," he added.
