The establishment of Rastafarian beliefs and practises in the 1930s was strongly influenced by Indian culture. Leonard Howell, the founder of Rastafari, is known to have socialised with Indian indentured workers who introduced ganja seeds to the island. Howell adopted the Hindu practises of ganja consumption for spiritual and medicinal purposes, mystical religious practises, and a vegetarian diet into the tenets of Rastafari.
