Proper parenting and child abuse

THE EDITOR, Sir:
Crime, violence and all other forms of abuse against our fellow men are heinous, and more so against our children. The situation is of such that we have established governmental and non-governmental agencies to investigate and protect our children against abuse. We have heard successive governments promise to put laws and measures in place to protect our children - the latest coming from Prime Minister Andrew Holness speaking at the second regional conference of International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) in St James on Sunday.
Frankly, the care of our children should begin in the home. But, for many abused children, this is where their horror begins. Homes should be a safe haven for children to grow and be nurtured with love, good values and attitudes that will enable them in return to treat well their peers and fellow men as they grow.
Therefore, the onus is on us all to educate our people on proper parenting. It is evident today that many of our parents lack proper parenting skills. Hence we have many ills in our society.
