One of St James’ most wanted men was fatally shot on Thursday morning during a confrontation with members of the security forces in the Granville community in the parish.

The deceased has been identified as Amoy Young, otherwise called ‘Pinky’, of Gordon Crescent in Granville. He is reportedly the third gunman to be killed by members of the security forces in St James within the past 11 days.

According to police reports, shortly after 9 a.m. on Thursday, officers were on patrol in Granville when they came under heavy gunfire from three armed men. The fire was returned by the officers, and during the confrontation Young was shot and killed.

A 9mm semi-automatic pistol fitted with a magazine and containing two live rounds was taken from Young’s body.

Residents saluted the police in the wake of Young’s death, saying that he had been a source of fear in the community.

“This bredda yah is no angel,” one resident told The Gleaner. “The boy gwaan like him a police inna the community and a whole heap a wi fraid a night time because a him. A whole heap more like him inna Granville and the police need fi patrol the community more often and get rid a them.”

Prior to Young’s death, 35-year-old Kayon ‘Scatta’ Wellington was shot and killed on March 10 during an alleged confrontation with the police at a house in Belmont, St James.

Wellington, who was the alleged leader of the Deans Lane Gang, was a person of interest in relation to six murders, including the shooting deaths of a security guard and a courier driver on Sunday, March 9, and the murder of security guard Lloyd Johnson in late January.

On March 16, 22-year-old Tony Romario Barrett of Catherine Hall was shot and killed during an alleged shoot-out with the police. His death sparked a massive protest from family members, who alleged that he was killed in cold blood.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has commenced investigations into all three incidents.
