The team from the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport successfully defended their titles at the sixth staging of the MoBay City Run at the Old Hospital Park on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard yesterday. The event, staged for its first time, saw over 4,000 runners taking part.

Oshane Archibald took the 10K men’s race in 33:10.34 minutes, with Shanice Gordon capturing the women’s section in 44:03.92 minutes. The 5k was won by Garfield Gordon in 15:15.92 minutes for the men, with Kelly-Ann Beckford taking the women’s section in 18:55.04 minutes.

Rae McFarlane, distance coach at G.C. Foster, praised his athletes’ dedication.

“The secret is just dedication and training,” he said. “Mr [Maurice] Wilson put together a good distance programme, and I just implemented it. At the end of the day, though, you have to give it up to the athletes because on the day, they are the ones who have to come out and do the work. They listen, do what you ask of them, put in the work, and it pays off for them.

“[With] these athletes that I have right now, it is not as hard. These guys want it, are dedicated to it, and love it, so when it comes to training, they are ready,” he added.

When asked what the plan is going forward for the distance programme, McFarlane said that despite it being a tough task, they are looking to lower some personal-best times going into the National Trials.
