Back with baby - ‘I want to run and scream,’ says overjoyed mom after being reunited with stolen son

For months, 17-year-old Aaliah Wray shed many tears as she wondered about the fate of her son, Nyyear Frank, who was snatched on Rousseau Road in St Andrew on October 13 last year.

Yesterday, the teenager was still in tears, but this time, they were sparked by the joy of being reunited with her son, who is now a little more than four months old.

“Honestly, I feel like I want to run and scream. I feel excited ... . I can’t explain all the emotions that I am going through, but all I know is that I would never give up on my son. I am so happy,” she told The Gleaner.

Baby Nyyear was found yesterday at a house on Finch Crescent, a community off Waltham Park Road in St Andrew.

Head of the police’s Corporate Communications Unit, Senior Superintendent Stephanie Lindsay, revealed that a woman has been arrested and is due to be quizzed by investigators. In the meantime, Lindsay said that the baby appeared to be in good health.

Meanwhile, Arnett Ramsay, father of the baby-snatching suspect, said that he was shocked and puzzled when he was informed by a policeman that his daughter had stolen a baby and had been pretending that the child was hers.

Ramsay leaned on a wall inside his Finch Crescent home, in apparent bewilderment, and explained that he had had no idea that the toddler, whom he had nicknamed ‘Surprise’, was not his grandson.

“Mi nuh come to terms with this ... . Mi can’t believe she would do something like this. This was something that was planned, but I know the baby right mother didn’t plan anything with them. When mi see how the girl (Wray) come and grab her baby and a cry, it tear up my heart. Mi feel relieved she get back her son,” he added, propping up his head with his palm.

“It sad to see mi daughter walk out inna handcuff, but mi feel relieved say the girl get back her baby because that girl wanted back her baby. If mi did have the slightest idea say is her baby, mi wouldn’t put up with it,” Ramsay said.

Nyyear’s grandmother, Shernett Wray, was also smiling from ear to ear when she exited the Half-Way Tree Police Station yesterday.

Like her daughter, she was overwhelmed with joy.

“When my daughter called me and told me that she found her baby, I just started to cry, and I left from work to be with them. I am just very, very happy.

“... For the months that he was missing, we had sleepless nights and we cried a lot. My daughter is just overjoyed. She can’t stop crying,” she said.
