CG2022 | Tough day three in the pool for Jamaica
Jamaicans in the pool at the Commonwealth Games today, had no joy, with all six failing to get beyond their respective heats at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham, England.
Keenan Dols, who competed in heat one of the 200-metre butterfly event was the first to get into the pool. Despite finishing a creditable fourth in the heat, Dols found his two minutes, 1.75 seconds (2:01.75) too slow for him to advance. That race was won by England’s Mason Wilby in 1:57.97. He qualified along with teammate James Guy, who was second in 1:58.30.
In the 50-metre backstroke, there were no qualifiers from heat three, a race won by the Bahamas’ Lamar Taylor in 26.12 seconds. Jamaica’s Nathaniel Thomas was fourth in 27.60.
Unfortunately, Jamaica’s Kelseigh Leigh Campbell did not start heat four of the women’s 50-metre butterfly. In heat five of the event, Zaneta Alvaranga, not for the first time in these Games, found herself in a very fast heat. Alvaranga ended seventh in a heat where there were six qualifiers. Canada’s Margaret MacNeil won in 26.24 seconds, while Alvaranga’s seventh-place finish took 27.89. The Jamaican finished behind Bermuda’ Maddy Moore, who qualified with 27.33.
From one of the fastest heats in an event to one of the slowest, Nathaniel Thomas was fifth in the men’s 100-metre freestyle, where nobody qualified.
The race was won by Antigua’s Stefano Mitchell in 51.42 seconds. Thomas hit the wall in 52.64, while his teammate, Sidrell Williams, was eighth in 53.54.
