DISASTER PREPAREDNESS SAFETY TIPS

• Have a family emergency plan and ensure that each member of the

household is aware of it.

• Ensure that you have an emergency

disaster kit packed and ready to

be utilised.

• Ensure you have adequate supply of

medication and non-perishable food

that can last for at least a few days.

• Store adequate supply of water for

drinking and domestic purposes.

• Check in and around your home

for any problems that may cause flooding and leaking, and take corrective measures.

• Secure your home and property as

best as possible.

• Know your parish disaster

coordinator.

• Know your community evacuation

routes.

• Know the closest shelter to you.

• If you and your family are at risk,

evacuate immediately to a safe location.

• Know your emergency numbers.

• Ensure that you back up your contact

numbers. Print a copy if possible.

• Ensure that you back up other important information.

• Secure important documents in

waterproof containers.

• Note and print important contacts –

family, neighbours, friends as well

as those for emergency support – your doctor, ODPEM, the fire brigade, police, etc.

• Secure a prepaid ‘Top Up’ card (for

prepaid service).

• Get a car charger. Test it to ensure that it is working properly.

• Secure an alternative (non-cordless)

home phone.

• Ensure that you charge your devices

once a hurricane warning is issued.

• Keep your phones dry by placing them in a plastic/Ziploc bag. Also try to keep your other devices dry by storing them in plastic bags or containers.

• Make sure to have working flashlights and a portable radio.
