13 year-old stars as Royal Lakes get first win
Thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Miller scored a first-half brace last Saturday to give Royal Lakes a 2-1 win over Real Mobay, their first in the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL), and coach Kadish Fishley says some of the other players need to take a page from the young St Jago player’s book.
“We shouldn’t be relying on her because she is just 13, but she has shown that she is one of the better players on the team, and some of the others need to step up and match her intensity and prove themselves like she has,” Fishley told The Gleaner.
Miller fired the hosts in front after just four minutes and added another in the 19th, and although Daniel Beckford pulled one back before the break, Royal Lakes saw out the game for the win.
Nevertheless, Fishley was far from pleased with how her team faded after scoring their second.
“It could have been better from my team. We started out very disciplined, but when we went two goals up, we lost our discipline, and Real MoBay were able to get back into the game. So as much as we won, there are some things to work out,” she said.
“They (players) realise that we have to do better because a lot of the senior players were upset because of how the game went, and they know they need to step up.
“But it is a long season, so we have a lot of time to get into the groove. We just need to continue building on these three points.”
In the other Zone B game, Cavalier slammed Mile Gully 6-0, with Rena Gordon getting a double and Ramona Wallace, Tamara O’Sullivan, Susan Gregory, and Kadian Edwards scoring a goal each.
Mile Gully remain winless after two starts.
In Zone A, Frazsiers Whip scored the biggest win of the season, a 20-0 drubbing of Rangers FC.
Davia Richards slammed in eight goals, Shaneil Buckley got five, Christiana Salmon four, Akelia Johnson and Omelia Grant one each and a Makida Ashley own goal.
In another match, Carlletia Souizon grabbed a hat-trick as Olympic Gardens defeated Springers United 6-1. Stefanie Morgan, Hogena Brown, and Ashlee Sawyers also scored for Olympic.
Britney Gregory netted Springers’ consolation goal.
