Brown dominates pro event at Caymanas golf course

WESLEY BROWN was in scintillating form at the Caymanas Golf Course, his eight-under-par 136 securing him the Professional Golfers Association two-day Golf Pro League Series yesterday.

The St Ann native Brown started his hot streak by carding a five-under-par 67 on the opening day, which included seven birdies, with four in a row on holes five, six, seven and eight.

Despite two bogeys on the opening day, Brown returned on the final day, beginning where he left off by rattling up another five birdies to finish with a three-under-par 69 for a two-day total of 136.

Brown’s effort was seven shots better than second-place finisher Orville Christie, who shot a two-day total of one-under-par 143, broken down into scores of 74 and 69.

Raymond Brown joined Christie in second place with his rounds of 71 and 72 for an equivalent two-day tally of 143.

Wesley Brown, who copped the $60,000 winner’s cash prize, said his overall preparation coming into the event helped him to claim the title.

“It was a good win for me because I have been hitting the ball well over the two days. Leading up to the tournament, I have been playing well and preparing well. I played eight rounds in the last nine days and shot 40 under par, which is exceptional.”

In the meantime, Errol Bhalai and Linval Higgins tied for top spot among the senior professionals. Bhalai shot rounds of 73 and 81 for a two-day total of 10-over-par 154, while Higgins kept pace with rounds of 74 and 80.

Justin Burrowes topped the field in the amateur section after carding a four-under-par 140, following rounds of 74 and 66. Bobby Chin was second with 155 and Damion Spencer was third with 156. Former Cricket West Indies President Dave Cameron was fourth with 159.

Maurine Blake, with a total of 166, won the ladies’ section with Valerie Bernard second with 183.

Tournament organiser Seebert Walker lauded the golfers for turning out and representing both the professional and amateur ranks.

“The tournament went well, which was highlighted by some good scores. We were blessed with the most amateurs that we have ever had in the field and the aim and objective are by 2027, we will have one of our guys out there on the major tour.”
