Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton join Nurses Dionne Lawrence and Dian Osodolar-Cammock in sharing bun and cheese for residents and staff at the St Catherine Infirmary on Wednesday. Tufton delivered the traditional Jamaican Easter treats to the facility to thank them for their service.

There were smiling faces at the St Catherine Infirmary in Spanish Town on Wednesday, following a visit by Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton.

Tufton treated residents and staff to gifts of bun and cheese in the spirit of the Easter season.

The health and wellness minister noted that although the infirmary falls under the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, his ministry has referred several social cases from the hospital to the institution.

“This visit is designed to bring a smile to your faces as I was elsewhere with my team, but I find it wise to come and give you a post-Easter visit,” Tufton said.

“We need to care for the less fortunate, so it is pleasing that we are here to share with you today.”

He encouraged the staff to continue to care for the 143 residents at the Monk Street-based facility, where the oldest resident is 97 and the youngest 27.

Matron Moesha Jones said that Tufton’s gesture was appreciated by all concerned.

“The laughter and smiles of the residents is a clear indication that we appreciate the kind consideration of the official out of his busy schedule to be here,” Jones said.

She added that the needs of the infirmary are wide and varied, so whatever help is given is appreciated.

Meanwhile, Camille Hudson, of the St Catherine Poor Relief Department, endorsed the gesture as being “timely” for the residents of the institution.
