Scientists have developed AI that can tell if breast cancer is going to spread
The technology is able to measure the immune response of lymph nodes of those with triple negative breast cancer - an aggressive form of the disease - to find if it could predict if the condition was likely to metastasise.
Breast cancer cells typically first spread to lymph nodes in the armpit that is closest to the tumour.
Experts at King's College London believe that the AI model could lead to more tailored treatment based on a woman's individual risk profile.
Dr Anita Grigoriadis, who led the research, said: "Using our AI, we looked at lots of lymph node pictures and we homed in on specific patterns.
"What we have seen is that when we look at many lymph nodes from many patients, we saw that when we find these features, they seem to be a sign that the patient somehow has the ability to hold off developing cancers in other organs for longer than in these patients which we have not found these features in the lymph nodes."
