Scott vs Johnson to set Class Four on fire

FERNCOURT HIGH School’s Class Four athlete Rihanna Scott has been in awesome form this season and she will be hoping to carry that form into the March 19-23 ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs). She will contest the 100 and 200 metres at the meet.

After an outstanding year for Rock Hall Primary in 2023 Scott is now looking to dominate on the high school level. Unbeaten so far this season in both 100 and 200m with best times of 12.02 seconds and 25.56 seconds respectively, she will be hoping to extend her winning ways on the big stage.

Despite her good credentials, however, she will have to get by Hydel High’s Teixiera Johnson who is also eyeing the sprint double. In her second year in the class, Johnson, with season’s best times of 12.19 and 25.11 over the 100 and 200m respectively, will be hoping to build on the experience gained in 2023.

She was in blistering form last year, especially in the 200m, where she ran a wind-aided 24.96 to win at the Central Championship and was expected to do great things at Champs. However, an injury slowed her down as after reaching the final of the 200m, she jogged to an eighth-place finish.

She was also expected to meet Scott at the Central Championships last month but her coach pulled her from both sprints. She only participated in the 4x100 metres where her team was second to Edwin Allen High.

While Mount Alvernia’s duo of Zwange Edwards and Veneisha Pottinger could spoil the party here, Scott and Johnson are the class acts of the field and once both come into the championships healthy there should be a big battle between two quality athletes. Sub-12 seconds in the 100m and sub-25 seconds in the 200 are on the cards as both athletes look to start what could be a sprint rivalry for many years to come.
