Global maritime standards set for overhaul at IMO event

THE MARINE Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), in its 81st session, is set to drive significant changes in global maritime standards from March 18 to 22, at the IMO headquarters in London. This event will convene industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to address pressing issues shaping the maritime sector.

Central to the agenda is the discussion on implementing the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships. MEPC 81 will examine proposals for mid-term measures, including a technical marine fuel standard and an economic pricing mechanism to regulate GHG intensity.

In addition to climate change mitigation, energy efficiency of ships will be under scrutiny, with a focus on fuel oil consumption and assessing the carbon intensity and efficiency of the existing fleet. The event will establish a working group on air pollution and energy efficiency to spearhead efforts in this domain.

Marine litter, particularly the issue of lost containers, will also take centre stage. MEPC 81 is set to adopt amendments to MARPOL Protocol I, mandating reporting procedures for lost freight containers. These amendments aim to enhance navigation safety and minimise environmental hazards posed by lost containers.

Furthermore, MEPC 81 will address critical aspects of Ballast Water Management Convention implementation, including operational guidelines and amendments to the convention. Proposals for the establishment of Emission Control Areas and the implementation of the Hong Kong Convention on ship recycling will also be on the agenda.

An important focus area of MEPC 81 is the reduction of underwater noise, with a draft action plan to be considered. The event will also see the adoption of revised guidelines on the life cycle GHG intensity of marine fuels, which will facilitate comprehensive assessments of GHG emissions associated with marine fuel production and use.

MEPC 81 underscores the IMO’s commitment to foster global cooperation in addressing maritime challenges and advancing sustainable practices. The event’s outcomes are set to shape the trajectory of the maritime industry, with implications for safety, environmental protection, and economic sustainability.
