NWC urges proper disposal of waste as influx of garbage affects Darling Street Wastewater Plant

The National Water Commission (NWC) says operations at the Darling Street Wastewater Plant in Kingston have been impacted by an influx of garbage which has damaged one of its pumps.
The NWC says it's currently repairing the pump and work is expected to be completed on Sunday.
It says the pump began malfunctioning on Saturday as a result of the influx of garbage and other debris, resulting in an overflow of sewage in the area.
"With the pump at the facility being damaged as a result of improper garbage disposal, the NWC again wishes to remind the public that they must be mindful of how their waste is handled.
"In instances where the garbage enters the system, it reduces the operating capacity of the pumps at the facility, leading to sewerage overflows and other challenges, severely impacting homes and businesses," the NWC says.
