Petrojam supplies specialised asphalt for major airport runway projects

Petrojam Limited, Jamaica’s sole oil refinery, is to supply more than 3,000 barrels (497,000 litres) of performance grade (PG) asphalt for the resurfacing of the runway at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA).

Petrojam has been the exclusive supplier of PG asphalt, a special grade of asphalt required for runway resurfacing and expansion projects at the nation’s two major airports – NMIA and Sangster International Airport (SIA).

Telroy Morgan, general manager of Petrojam, said the company’s ability to supply this special grade of asphalt underscores its commitment to continuously improve our products offerings through innovation.

PG asphalt is a classification of asphalt based on its performance characteristics in various temperatures and traffic conditions.

Unlike traditional viscosity or penetration-graded asphalts, which Petrojam normally supplies for regular road construction and repairs, PG Asphalt is designed to meet specific requirements dictated by the environment and operational demands where it will be used.

“Petrojam is delighted to provide this specialised grade of asphalt to the market, which is supporting Jamaica’s aviation industry’s growth. Its application in critical infrastructure like airports, highlights its capability to meet the rigorous demands of airport operations, offering enhanced durability, skid resistance, and longevity to ensure safe and efficient aircraft movement,” Morgan noted.

In 2023, Petrojam was also the exclusive supplier of the 12,250 barrels (1.95 million litres) of PG asphalt required for the runway extension project at SIA, in Montego Bay.

Petrojam also exports regular and performance grade asphalt to regional markets.

The vast majority of the nation’s roadways are paved with asphalt produced by Petrojam. These include the north-south leg of Highway 2000 (Caymanas to Ocho Rios) and TransJam Highway (East – West), which includes Portmore and Mandela to May Pen and May Pen to Williamsfied and the Southern Coastal Highway (Harbour View to Portland).
