SAJ celebrates Day of the Seafarer with a focus on safety
THE SHIPPING Association of Jamaica (SAJ) joins the global maritime community in celebrating the 2024 Day of the Seafarer today, June 25. This year’s focus highlights the critical role seafarers play in ensuring a safe and secure maritime industry.
“The dedication and expertise of seafarers are the backbone of global trade,” says Corah Ann Robertson-Sylvester, president of the Shipping Association of Jamaica. “They work tirelessly to ensure goods reach their destinations safely and efficiently. This year, we want to celebrate their commitment to safety by empowering them to share their best practices.
“Seafarers spend a significant amount of time onboard, and they have a unique perspective on safety challenges and solutions,” Robertson-Sylvester continued. “By sharing their insights, they can inspire their colleagues and contribute to a safer maritime environment for all.”
The campaign extends beyond seafarers. Seafarer organisations are encouraged to share pictures of their efforts to promote safety, while the wider public is invited to show their appreciation for the work seafarers do and the importance of their safety at sea.
The Day of the Seafarer, established in 2010, recognises the invaluable contributions of seafarers to the global economy and society. They are responsible for transporting over 90 per cent of the world’s goods, ensuring the smooth flow of international trade.
