JPS: 83 per cent of customers now have electricity

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says 83 per cent of its customers now have electricity.

In a post to its X account this evening, JPS said: “Talk about heavy lifting...because of the dedication and determination of our hard working teams, 83% of our valued customers now have electricity. Early mornings, late nights and the passion our teams have brought us a far way in five days. We're on it Jamaica!”

Earlier today, Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, accused JPS of focusing on the "easy tasks" in the power restoration effort while it is yet to begin the "heavy lifting".

"It is clear that the JPSCo is focusing on the easy tasks and has yet to commence the heavy lifting part of the restoration effort. It is apparent that they lack the necessary personnel and resources to efficiently restore electricity to our communities. This prolonged delay is not only inconvenient but also detrimental to the economic well-being of our nation," Paulwell said in a press release.

In an apparent response, JPS posted: “Because we've been heavy lifting…83% of registered customers now have power.”

The light and power company has been coming under fire, with persons accusing it of not moving quickly enough to restore service to all its customers following the impact of the Category 4 Hurricane Beryl six days ago.
