Portmore man accused of tricking pregnant girlfriend out of money charged with fraud

A Waterford, Portmore, St Catherine businessman was on Monday charged for allegedly defrauding his pregnant girlfriend out of $450,000 that was intended for the woman to use to open a place of business.

Thirty-three-year-old Charles Brown is charged with larceny by trick and fraudulent conversion.

Reports from the May Pen police are that Brown allegedly agreed with his pregnant girlfriend to find a place for her business.

Upon finding a place to rent, he was reportedly entrusted to make monthly payments of $50,000 on her behalf.

The police say between March to September, the payments were sent to Brown's account, accumulating to approximately $450,000.

The woman also paid for labour and renovation costs, according to the police.

During preparations for the opening of the business, Brown reportedly told his pregnant girlfriend to leave the establishment, claiming to be the rightful owner.

According to the police, it was later discovered that the correct rent amount was $40,000 instead of $50,000.

A report was made to the police on Sunday, September 22, and on Monday, September 23, Brown turned himself in, where he was subsequently charged with the offences.
