Danae Vaccianna, protected area supervisor, Urban Development Corporation (UDC), explains the usefulness of a Jamaican Yellow Boa snake in controlling the rodent population while encouraging students from three basic schools – St Tekle Hammonait, St Isaacs, and Holy Trinity on Maxfield Avenue in St Andrew – their parents, and school officials to protect the creature. The UDC recently partnered with the Rita Marley Foundation and the Hope Zoo Preservation Foundation to stage the first of a series of environmental education workshops. Other environmental topics covered include reducing the plastic pollution in communities and on the beach. The UDC is charged with spearheading the protection of the Hellshire Hills and Goat Islands, which form a part of the Portland Bight Protected area through its Natural Resource and Environmental Management Department.
