The Department of Literatures in English, The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, announces the rescheduling of this semester's film workshop with 2017-2018 Filmmaker-in-Residence Michelle Serieux on Saturday, June 30, at The UWI, Mona Campus, from 9 a.m. 6 p.m.

The workshop covers the essential elements of visual storytelling for the short film format and the development process, including character development, story structure, and visual style. The format includes group work as well as one-on-one consultations and pitching practice.

"The creative process of making a short film starts with an idea and ends with your vision on screen. In between, there are critical elements of the journey that are often overlooked by first-time filmmakers, essential elements that can make the difference between getting your project selected for funding or remaining stuck on the shelf," Serieux said.

"Over the years," she added. "I have learnt quite a bit about story, through various workshops and also through having tried and failed. I have been on both sides of this equation as a judge for short film contests and also as an applicant, and after years helping persons tweak their story treatments to become winning applications, I figured it was time to share some key insights. If you want to give your dream short a fair shot at being made, this is your opportunity to do so."

Applicants are asked to apply with a short story outline or treatment (one-page maximum), a bio, and artist statement and reason for wanting to attend the workshop.

The workshop cost is J$10,000, and applicants will be notified on a rolling basis until June 22. The final deadline for registration and payment is June 25. As the workshop is intensive, the space is limited.

At the end of the workshop, participants should have a solid treatment for each project and be equipped to enter, compete, and win talent discovery competitions such as Propella and other initiatives on the horizon for emerging Caribbean filmmakers.

Michelle Serieux closes out her semester as filmmaker-in-residence with this one-day workshop.
