STGCOBA to celebrate Monsignor Gladstone Wilson

Celebration and recognition of the life of Monsignor Gladstone Wilson will be the focal point at the 13th staging of the St George’s College Old Boys Association (STGCOBA) awards banquet on October 18 at the Spanish Court Worthington, 16 Worthington Avenue, New Kingston.

According to a press release from the STGCOBA, past students who have made a sterling contribution to the North Street institution as well as the wider society will be recognised. This year’s honourees are Michael Chuck - Class of 1969; Tony Wong – Class of 1957; and Wayne Wray – Class of 1978.

Monsignor Wilson is among the most distinguished graduates of St George’s College – His personal achievements were balanced by humility, a guiding sense of social justice, and commitment to his fellowman. With his ability, Monsignor Wilson, who could have sought the limelight, instead laboured under the searchlight of truth and excellence.

He earned his first doctorate when he was 23 and went on to earn another three doctoral degrees and master 14 languages in his lifetime.

Being ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in Italy at a time when he was refused acceptance in his own country, he became a distinguished lecturer at Urban College in Rome. Upon reaching the height of his accomplishments, Monsignor Gladstone Wilson was regarded as the seventh most learned person in the world.

“With the bar set high, Monsignor Gladstone Wilson awardees must invariably work hard to distinguish themselves from the wealth of talented peers, and this year’s awardees are no different,” the release said. “Having been instilled with the tenets of a Jesuit education at St George’s College, these Knights of St George’s have excelled in their respective vocational pursuits, particularly in the fields of business and finance. But their most defining pursuits have been their decades of consistent dedication to all aspects of St George’s College life as alumni or through the old boys association.”

EXTENDED CONTRIBUTIONS

The experiences and doctrines from a St George’s College education were shared in their extended volunteer contributions to the Stella Maris Foundation, the United Way of Jamaica, Area 4 Police Civic Committee, and a number of charitable organisations.

Part proceeds from the banquet will be in aid of refurbishing the school’s science laboratories.
