Huawei Technologies Jamaica Company Limited has welcomed six students from the University of Technology, Jamaica and The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica for its internship programme. The programme, which was launched in 2019, provides young talents the opportunity to put their knowledge and skills into practice in different areas of the company.

Since its launch, the company has received over 100 applications from students from universities in Jamaica each year. The selection process includes multiround interviews with the interview panel evaluating applicants’ soft skills, education background, and personal career goals.

It aims at giving the cohort hands-on experience in fields such as IT, telecommunication engineering, and project finance accounting. Kalia Lee Rodney, a student at the UWI majoring in computer science says her experience has been good. “My internship experience so far has been good. Even though my role is not directly related to my field of study, I have been learning new skills about the finance side of business. My mentor has been excellent in providing guidance in order for me to apply myself in this unfamiliar area,” said Rodney.

UNDERSTANDING SOFTWARE

“As a wireless engineer intern, I am looking forward to understanding the software and equipment required to operate as well as integrate systems and networks to facilitate communication services,” said D’Andra Holness from the University of the West Indies pursuing a ajmor in biomedical engineering.

As part of the corporate social responsibility strategy developed over the last few years, Huawei ,through its ICT Talent Development Plan, with programsme, such as Seeds for the Future, Huawei ICT Academy, internship programme and ICT competition, reinforce the initiative to transmit knowledge, skills, and innovation capabilities in ICT to the new generation of Jamaican youth in order to better support the digital transformation and development of the country.

In this regard, Huawei is committed to supporting the development of ICT and the digital economy by investing in young people, creating an open and collaborative ecosystem, which seeks to maximise the technological capabilities of students in order to support Jamaica on the path of digital transformation. Huawei believes that the continuous training of young talent is crucial to the technological and economic growth of the countries in which the company operates.
