Chairman of Jamaica Public Service Company Limited, Damian Obiglio, has stepped into the role of chief executive of the utility following the surprise resignation of newcomer Steve Berberich.

Just months into his appointment as president and CEO of the power utility, Berberich advised that he would be leaving his new job and the country due to personal circumstances.

“A recent death in my family and other pressing matters, has prompted a need for me to be geographically closer to them,” he explained in a statement issued by JPS on Monday.

“I know the time has been short but it has been an honour to lead JPS, facilitate improvements in customer care and reliability, and renew the brand perception,” he said.

Obligio is a senior executive of Marubeni Power International Inc of Japan, one of the primary owners of JPS, and senior vice president of Marubeni’s Caribbean Operations.

He is fairly new to the position of chairman of JPS, to which he was appointed in April 2023, but not to the utility itself, having led the company for more than five years as president and CEO, from July 2006 to November 2011.

Berberich joined JPS on May 31, 2023, nearly two months into Obiglio’s tenure as chairman.
