BRIDGETOWN, Barbados:

The Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) is observing its 35th anniversary this year, with its secretary general, Dona Regis-Prosper, urging regional stakeholders to be part of the year-long activities marking the occasion.

Regis-Prosper said that the activities will be held under the theme ‘Connecting the Globe, Celebrating Diversity’ and that it underscores the CTO’s commitment to inclusivity, cultural exchange, and sustainable tourism practices.

“This is a call to embrace the uniqueness of each destination, while recognising the shared thread that binds us together as one vibrant and diverse Caribbean family,” she added.

The CTO secretary general said that the region’s tourism sector had shown resilience and its ability to recover following the challenges faced by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and other situations, including the impact of climate change.

“Our Caribbean tourism sector demonstrated remarkable strength and adaptability in the face of challenges and uncertainties. We persevered, worked together, and welcomed visitors back to our beautiful destinations.”

She said the successful reintroduction of hallmark CTO events, including Caribbean Week in New York and the State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) ensured, “the safety and satisfaction of all who chose to experience the magic of the Caribbean”.

She acknowledged the strides made by member countries in sustainable tourism, and the CTO’s ongoing focus on effective communication, as well as the critical role of research in reimagining Caribbean tourism.

Regis-Prosper spoke of the importance of the Caribbean region hosting the 2024 International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup in June, describing the tournament as an opportunity to showcase the region’s hospitality, cultural richness, and sporting prowess to the global community.

“This novel event will be viewed by millions of people worldwide. We must not forget that every viewer is a potential visitor,” she said, adding, “so this year I invite you to join the CTO in raising our banners high and moving together as one Caribbean”.
