Anna Netrebko returns to the Met in her acclaimed interpretation of the heroine Tatiana in Tchaikovsky's romantic tragedy Eugene Onegin. Robin Ticciati conducts all performances of Deborah Warner's production, which also stars Peter Mattei as Onegin, a role that he has sung previously with the company. The cast also features Alexey Dolgov as Onegin's friend Lenski, Elena Maximova as Tatiana's sister Olga, and Stefan Kocan as Prince Gremin in the April 22 performance, It will be transmitted worldwide as part of the 11th season of the Met's Live in HD series, which now reaches more than 2,000 cinemas in 71 countries around the world, including Carib 5 here in Jamaica.

Act I is set in autumn in the country. On the Larin estate, Madame Larina reflects upon the days before she married, when she was courted by her husband but loved another man. She is now a widow with two daughters Tatiana and Olga. While Tatiana spends her time reading novels, with whose heroines she closely identifies, Olga is being courted by their neighbour, the poet Lenski. He arrives unexpectedly, bringing with him a new visitor, the aristocrat Eugene Onegin, with whom Tatiana soon falls in love.

Tchaikovsky's lyric gifts are at their most powerful and multilayered in theopera. Rich ensembles punctuate the work, including a quartet for women near the beginning, an elaborate choral ensemble that concludes the first scene of Act II, and a haunting fugue for tenor and baritone in Act II, Scene 2.
