Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic Theatre) returns to National Theatre Live with a modern production of Henrik Ibsen’s classical drama masterpiece Hedda Gabler, being screened in an encore at Palace Cineplex on Sunday July 2, at 11:30 a.m.

Henrik Ibsen, who is considered by many as the father of modern prose drama, wrote Hedda Gabler in 1890, shortly before he returned to Oslo, Norway.

A Belgian, Ivo Van Hove, one of today’s most exciting directors, discovered his passion for theatre while studying at boarding school. Van Hove started his career as a theatre director in 1981 with his production (Germs and Rumours), a play he wrote and directed. Since 1984, he has been one of the artistic leaders of the Dramatic Arts Department of the University College Antwerp. In 2001, Van Hove became director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam, the Netherlands' largest repertory company, and is a well known off-Broadway avant-garde experimental theatre productions.

British Independent Film Award winner and Oscar nominee, Patrick Marber is also no stranger to the National Theatre's stage, as he is a long-time playwright of the National Theatre. His first play, Dealer’s Choice, which he wrote and directed, was staged at the National Theatre in 1993. Marber's adaptation of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler according to The Guardian, is 'an invigorating production which forces us to see Ibsen's masterpiece with fresh eyes'. Marber is also an Oxford University Graduate and comedian known for his role on BBC 4's satirical current affairs show On the Hour.

The titular role in Hedda Gabler is played by Golden Globe Award winner, Ruth Wilson, who Time Out describes as "magnificent and upsetting as a nihilistic Hedda".
