The Met: Live in HD 2018-19 presents 'Samson et Dalila' at Palace Cineplex
Tenor Roberto Alagna and mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca take on two of history's most famous lovers in the title characters of Saint-Saens' engrossing masterpiece Samson et Dalila - on screen at Palace Cineplex this Sunday, October 28, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. The production, directed by Tony Award winner Darko Tresnjak, is based on the popular story in the biblical book of Judges. Set in the ancient city of Gaza, Samson, a judge (a pre-monarchic leader) of the ancient Israelites, fights valiantly against the Philistines, enemies of his people, until Dalila seduces him and shears off his hair, the secret to his superhuman strength. The Philistines capture and blind him then bring him to a crowded temple. Praying to God for one final moment of strength, Samson pulls down the pillar to which he is bound and causes the temple to collapse, killing everyone inside, including himself. Sir Mark Elder conducts the first new Met production of the work in 20 years.
