Mitsy Campbell, more popularly known as ‘Shuga’, celebrates her birthday today.

The 2009 winner of televised talent contest Digicel Rising Stars was born in New Ramble, St James, and grew up in a Christian home. Her mom was a devoted Seventh-day Adventist, while her dad owned a sound system. She attended the Bogue Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she honed her singing skills.

Shuga has been performing in the Second City regularly since 2003, after graduating from Herbert Morrison Technical High School.

She started out doing regular gigs in Montego Bay at the Brewery, later settling down to full-time employment as a band singer at The Coral Cliff, on the Hip Strip.

Last year, on International Women’s Day, Shuga launched a foundation – Femme Phenomenal – to empower and encourage rape and abuse victims.

This year, she kick-started her career with a collaborative single with reggae legends Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths. Titled Tribute to the I-Three, Shuga says that she is “paying respect and honouring these black women who went through tribulation, but acknowledged they could only overcome with who else but Jah Jah”.

Happy birthday!
