Korean folk group Coreyah performs in Jamaica
In honour of Korea and Jamaica’s 60th anniversary, the Korean embassy invited Coreyah, a psychedelic Korean folk music group from Seoul, to perform in Kingston at the Courtleigh Auditorium last Tuesday.
Since the group’s debut in 2010, Coreyah has pioneered a new style of Korean music that blends genres of contemporary ethnic and popular sounds while still maintaining the distinctive characteristics of traditional Korean instruments.
Coreyah has toured the world visiting over 50 cities in 34 countries and continues to delight audiences at home and abroad. Coreyah released its fourth album, Clap & Applause, in July 2020. This album celebrates its 10th anniversary with a dance-inducing, exciting new vision for Korean world music.
Korean traditional rhythms combine with toe-tapping and hand-clapping dance beats set to the sounds of the soulful daegeum flute, electrifying geomungo zither, and fierce janggu hourglass drum. Clap & Applause continues its long-standing effort to infuse pop into traditional music through bold, youthful style, heartfelt lyrics, and a psychedelic sound.
Baejin LIM, charge d’affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, remarked that events such as these “will not only strengthen the existing cultural bond between Korea and Jamaica but increase our understanding of each other as friends”.
