Math teacher takes Miss Trelawny Festival Queen crown

Erickay Chambers, a 22-year-old mathematics teacher at William Knibb High School, was crowned Miss Trelawny Festival Queen 2023 on Saturday night.
The second runner-up was Bathsheda Harris; Jamelia Green, who won the Best Performer sectional prize, was first runner-up.
The crowning, which was held at the Glistening Waters Hotel, had six young ladies vying for the crown.
Before the winner was declared, all six contestants entertained the audience with an opening dance and each contestant presented a talent piece.
In the question-and-answer segment, Chambers was asked about the things the country should look for when it becomes a republic. In her response, she focused on the Privy Council and the kind of president the country should have.
“I would like to see a quick decision being made on whether a ceremonial president or other. I would also like to have the country make a decision on the Privy Council. The justice system needs to know how it is going to operate.”
Chambers won three sectional prizes, including Most Active in her Community, Most Poised and Most Culturally Aware, a category which carried 40 per cent of the total points a contestant could earn.
Speaking with The Gleaner following her win, she expressed elation at being selected Miss Trelawny Festival Queen and spoke of the special project she would undertake during her reign.
“I intend to start student priority outreach programme which is educational. The aim will be to help students get rid of the fear of mathematics. Many students shy away from class because of fear. The hope is that this fear will be reduced. Even after my year as queen the programme will still operate.”
